The account

Description

12 cm. Male grayish olive above with dark gray head and a line of white stipples arching backwards above the upper border of the ear coverts. Wings olive-brown with narrow white bars on coverts. Throat white. Belly lemon yellow with blackish-gray spots.

Female has a rufous crown but is otherwise similar.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Song an accelerating and descending (in the last part) 'tuetuetuetue tu tutututututu' faster at the beginning than the song of Dysithamnus mentalis. Call a low 'wurrr' repeated sometimes for long time periods or a repeated 'wiu....wiu...'

Behavior

Occurs commonly in lower growth of secondary and primary woodland borders. Sometimes occurs together with Dysithamnus mentalis.

Habitat and status

Relatively common in undergrowth of primary and secondary humid forest.

Distribution

Throughout but not in dryer inland habitats. Found at PE Jacupiranga, Ilha do Cardoso, Iguape, Fazenda Intervales, coastal forests from Bertioga to Rio de Janeiro, Serra Bocaina, Serra Mantiqueira etc., From sea level to about 1000 meters.
