13 cm. Male has a black crown, the rest of the head pale-gray. Pale-gray mantle. Wings rusty. Tail black, the outer feathers with white spots. Below white with black barring. <NFemale crown is chestnut-rufous. Back browner. Beige below. Song, slowly starting "kyo kyo kyo kyo ku kukukukuku" is similar to that of /Thamnophilus ruficapillus . A small Thamnophilus of the Brazilian plateau region. Not uncommon in low scrub in Caatinga areas, swamps and plantations. The interior of Estado S<C4>o Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
