Rufous-capped Antshrike

16 cm. The male is rusty-brown above, with gray sides of neck and head forming a collar. Below grayish white, the breast boldly barred black. tail dark brown, with white spotted outers. <NThe female has a rufous crown, wings and tail and is otherwise brown above. Below unbarred grayish white. Song is a slow accelerating "dije dje dje dje dedededededeeh" the last syllable somewhat emphasized . Forages in dense scrub and thickets, but appears regularly in the open. Mostly in pairs. The typical antshrike of high altitude scrub. In montane and highland scrub, forest borders and clearings but not in the interior of cloud forest. On all higher ranges in Estado de S<C4>o Paulo Campos do Jord<C4>o, Serra Bocaina and Estado de Rio de Janeiro Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Org<C4>os , but is not confined to the higher regions and also occurs, e. g., near sede of<8E>Fazenda Intervales<8E>.
