The account

Description

24 cm. A large dark and long tailed antshrike of open brush in the highlands.

Male is black with white spots on the head and back. Wings with white bands.

Female is black with the crown spotted rufous and the back, neck and belly spotted buff. Wings and tail banded buff.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

An ascending row of 16-18 loud whistles, the last 3-4 descending in pitch. Call is a squeezed 'squeeeh'.

Behavior

Skulks low in brush.

Habitat and status

Fairly common in brushy secondary growth and forest borders. More regularly found in low brushy cover than Mackenziaena severa which is more associated with forest. In contrast to Ridgely we have noticed no particular affinity to bamboo.

Throughout the area at higher altitudes. To 2300 meters in the Serra Mantiqueira.
