24 cm. A large dark and long tailed antshrike of open brush in the highlands. <NMale is black with white spots on the head and back. Wings with white bands. <NFemale is black with the crown spotted rufous and the back, neck and belly spotted buff. Wings and tail banded buff. An ascending row of 16-18 loud whistles, the last 3-4 descending in pitch. Call is a squeezed "squeeeh". Skulks low in brush. Fairly common in brushy secondary growth and forest borders. More regularly found in low brushy cover than /Mackenziaena severa which is more associated with forest. In contrast to Ridgely we have noticed no particular affinity to bamboo.
