22 cm. A large, dark antshrike with a prominent pointed tuft. Tail shorter than that of /Mackenziaena leachii . <NThe male is grayish black with a black head. <NThe female has a rufous crown and is otherwise brownish black with narrow buff bars. Song is an ascending series of whistles "psiu pseee pseee pseee pseee": slower, more emphasized and drawn out than those of /Mackenziaena leachi . Calls are a rough "kree" and a low "craa craa". The warning call is a long repeated descending whistle uttered by both male and female, like "wiiuu wiiuu..." Skulking in low stratum of forest. More often heard than seen. Fairly common in humid primary or secondary forest and forest borders. Never far away from forest unlike /Mackenziaena leachii .
