25-26 cm. Slightly smaller than /Xiphocolaptes albicollis with a straighter, almost uncurved black and a somewhat shorter bill. Black head with buff streaking extending onto nape and upper back. Indistinct superciliary and supramalar stripe beige-white. Above olive-brown. Wings and tail dark chestnut. Throat white with faint brown streaks, malar stripe not pronounced. Breast brown with light buff streaks. Underparts olivaceous-brown with creamy narrow irregular bars. A descending row of single whistles much faster following each other than the calls of the preceding species | "wi wi wi wi wi wi wi wi.......", about 5 per sec. Consult also ^101 which features some calls which are not included here. Scaling trees at all heights. Quite common. Encountered in humid and dry primary and secondary forest. In contrast to the preceding species also in dryer open forests and degraded forests and forest remnants. Throughout, seems to be more common inland in dryer areas.
