Tawny-throated Leafscraper

16 cm. Upper parts dark warm brown, darker on the crown and nape. Bright rufous rump. Below reddish chestnut-brown, the belly dark brown. Tail blackish brown, Wings dark brown. <NImmature duller, with much less rufous. Song a descending high squeezed "piii piii piii piii piii pe pe", 2-3 seconds long, vaguely reminiscent of /Basileuterus leucoblepharus . Call a sharp "szet szet". Terrestrial and solitary, scraping on the ground and turning over leaves. In humid primary and secondary forest. Occurs probably rarely in the Serra do Mar of Estado do Rio de Janeiro and northeast S<C4>o Paulo ^15, ^44 . Found in the forests near<8E>Ubatuba ^13 . Below 1500 meters. Song is a descending row of high whistles like that of /Sclerurus caudacutus which occurs sympatrically further north in Espirito Santo, but with different intonation and structure. 15781 Song, call.
