Sharp-billed Treehunter

11 cm. A Xenops-like little furnarid of the highlands Vaurie placed it in the genus Xenops . However, in contrast to Xenops the culmen of the bill is slightly arched. Dark umber brown above, the crown darker, and the mantle conspicuously streaked with buffy-yellow. A prominent long buffy superciliary. Below pale buffy-yellow on the throat without a clear malar stripe. Chest and belly grayish-brown with prominent buffy-yellow streaks which become a darker, dull orange on the crissum. Tail chestnut reddish with pointed tips of the feathers. <NThe immature is similar, but the patterning is less distinct and it is below darker. Song a series of 8-12 high "tsick" sounds with the same frequency. Sometimes introduced by a short, soft twitter. Foraging in mid to low level of forest trees in a tit-like manner. Frequently found in mixed flocks. Uncommon to relatively common in humid primary and secondary upland forest and borders. Serra do Mar at <8E>Boraceia<8E> ^44 : <8E>Nucleo Sta.
