27-28 cm. The adult male has a cinnamon forehead becoming red from the crown to the crest and nape. Lores rusty cinnamon, scaled darker. Ear coverts and area beneath eye rusty cinnamon, narrowly vermiculated black. Moustachial stripe cinnamon. A white stripe from lower rear edge of ear coverts to upper breast side. Chin and throat rusty cinnamon. Lower throat, chest and belly white, barred dark. Hindneck, mantle, scapulars and upper back black. Lower back, rump and upper tail coverts creamy buff. <NThe female has less red in the face. <N/Dryocopus lineatus is bigger, has much less red in face, has a white moustachial stripe and usually a white shoulder stripe and is not as buffy on belly. Call a soft and mournful tu u u u u u u u u" vocalization 1 and various "chick" and "chick keer" sounds. Singly or in pairs foraging low or at middle height in humid rain forest down to two meters from the ground , also in canopy of trees. Breeds in September-October ^129 . Status and habitat. Rare in tall primary forest, swamp forest, tall secondary forest. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo found near<8E>Iguape Remold 1996 unpubl. , Fazenda Intervales 1987 ^119 , PE Carlos Botelho, Ilha do Cardoso Yamashita 1988, P. Matuscelli 1991 in ^122 .
