Lineated Woodpecker

30-36 cm. The male has the forehead, crown and crest red. Area from the lores above and below eye and across the ear coverts to the hindneck, black, bordered below by a white stripe from the lores to the lower border of the ear coverts and down the side of the neck. A black moustachial stripe with red in proximal part, expanding at rear and joining with the black of the breast. Throat white with black streaking. Hindneck and upperparts black. Outer scapulars with white outer webs forming a line. Wing and wing coverts black with a white area on the bases of inner webs of the primaries and secondaries. Tail black. Breast black. Belly and crissum grayish-buff with dark barring. Underwing black with white coverts and bases of flight feathers. <NIn the female the red on forehead, crown and moustache are replaced by black. Most common call a "pik urrrrrrrr" vocalizations 1 and 2 . Also a far carrying "wic wic wic wic wic . . ." and a "wika wika wika . . ". Both sexes drum with 5-8 slow taps followed by a long accelerated rattle. Singly or in pairs or family groups foraging at all heights of trees and telephone poles. Descends to the ground and tosses leaves. July to November. Common in humid and dry forest and edge, gardens and parks, second growth. Avoids marshes, but visits mangroves. More open areas are preferred.
