Pileated Parrot

22 cm. In the male the forehead, crown and lores to upper ear-coverts are red: the rest of body is green with yellowish on abdomen. <NThe female has a green head and a bluish suffusion on the forehead and breast. Primary coverts, edges of the outer wing-coverts and tail feathers dull blue. Central two tail feathers green with blue tips. Call a high pitched tiri" vocalizations 1 and 2 , but not always clearly separate from the calls of /Touit melanonota which is supposed to be tri-syllablic ^119 . Forages in small groups in the canopy of trees. In November ^120 , nest in hole of tree. Not uncommon in foothill and lower montane forest in the serras and littoral. In Estado Rio de Janeiro found in the<8E>Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E>and<8E>Itatiaia<8E>. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo found at <8E>Timburi, Bertioga, Sete Barras, Boraceia, Guaratuba, PE Carlos Botelho, Fazenda Intervales, PE Jacupiranga, Alto do Ribeira, Campos do Jord<C4>o, Serra Bocaina ^119 , Ubatumirim Remold, H., unpubl. .
