The account

Description

Male 21-23.5 cm, female 21-24.5 cm.

Forehead and face grayish white. Whitish violet on the crown. Hindneck iridescent purple or reddish. The rest of the upper side brown with a purplish sheen. Underside white with a purplish sheen. Bill and cere red. Iris orange brown or yellow brown,

The female is duller, with a purple gloss only on the hindneck. Neck and breast brownish.

Juveniles are darker with breast brown and feathers scalloped cinnamon.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Call a short 'poo' difficult to differentiate from the call of Leptotila rufaxilla(¹¹⁹).

Throughout. In Estado São Paulo found inland at Vassununga, Barreiro Rico, Fazenda Paraiso (¹¹⁹), Franca, Ituverava (⁴⁰). Pinto also mentions Rio de Janeiro, but no exact location given.
