19-23 cm. Male is dark blue-gray above, paler below. Two broad bands of purplish blue across the folded wing, and a smaller purplish band across the lesser wing coverts. Central tail feathers grey, the outermost tail feathers white, the rest grayish white. <NThe female is brown, lighter below, with lighter purple wingbands. The voice is described as "oo-OOT" ^121 . Since I never had the chance to hear or record this species, I have added the call of /Claravis montedoura which forms a superspecies with /Claravis godefrida with the assumption that the calls of these two taxa might be similar. Forages in dense bamboo forest. The preferred food is bamboo seeds: also eats fruits. Was found outside the breeding season in small groups. Teresopolis November <10> December. Nest in bushy tree. At the verge of extinction. Occurs in dense forests and forest borders with bamboo Guadua, Chusquea . Dependent on large areas of bamboo forests which are now fragmented and reduced in size. The remaining tracts seem to be too fragmented for a food specialist such as this dove. Was apparently still common in the late 1800 around Rio de Janeiro. Originally throughout.
