Description Disc 1 (2011)
14 cm. The adult"s top and sides of head, and mantle are rufous: wing coverts, scapulars and tertials black very prominently barred with white: back and rump sepia brown: throat, foreneck, and breast tawny buff turning to white on the abdomen, sides and flanks, the sides and flanks with broad black bars: bill dusky, the lower mandible tipped yellowish: legs blue gray.<nThe juvenile has blackish-brown upper parts, neck, chest and head, whitish throat and belly: belly laterally barred dusky, crissum grayish-brown.
Voice Disc 1 (2011)
Not known with certainty. Edwin Willis has reported that he repeatedly heard rail vocalizations near Itirapina unknown to him ^119 .

Forages in dense vegetation like other Laterallus species.
Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)
Data deficient. Extremely rare and probably disappearing due to clear cutting of the campos cerrados in the interior ^119 . Lives in flooded areas with tussocky grasses, wet overgrown pastures.

Interior of Estado S<C4>o Paulo. Found in 1994 by Ed Willis near <8E>Itirapina ^119 .
Taxonomy notes Disc 1 (2011)
Black and white barred scapulars and tertials are an unique feature of this species.
