Description Disc 1 · 2011
14 cm. The adult's top and sides of head, and mantle are rufous; wing coverts, scapulars and tertials black very prominently barred with white; back and rump sepia brown; throat, foreneck, and breast tawny buff turning to white on the abdomen, sides and flanks, the sides and flanks with broad black bars; bill dusky, the lower mandible tipped yellowish; legs blue gray.
The juvenile has blackish-brown upper parts, neck, chest and head, whitish throat and belly; belly laterally barred dusky, crissum grayish-brown.

Not known with certainty. Edwin Willis has reported that he repeatedly heard rail vocalizations near Itirapina unknown to him (119).

Forages in dense vegetation like other Laterallus species.
Habitat and status Disc 1 · 2011
Data deficient. Extremely rare and probably disappearing due to clear cutting of the campos cerrados in the interior (119). Lives in flooded areas with tussocky grasses, wet overgrown pastures.

Interior of Estado São Paulo. Found in 1994 by Ed Willis near Itirapina (119).
