Description Disc 1 (2011)

55-61 cm. The largest toucan. Black with a dusky brown crown: throat and upper breast white: rump white, crissum crimson: bill orange crimson, fading to greenish yellow on the sides of the maxilla: a large black oval patch near tip of maxilla: a narrow line at base of bill black.

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

Forages in small groups in the canopy, descends to the understory and to the ground: perches conspicuously on dead branches at the top of trees. Consumes fruit, insects, small vertebrates including birds.

Breeding Disc 1 (2011)

Nests in hollow trees and palms and riverbanks and termitaria.

Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)

Common in open country with palms and trees, riverine forest, open savannah forest, cerrado, scrub, orchards and plantations, to 1750 meters.

Distribution Disc 1 (2011)

Inland. In Estado Rio de Janeiro has invaded the <8E>Paraiba Valley. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo reported from <8E>Vassununga, S<C4>o Simao, Sertaocinho, Aracacu, Santana, Barreiro Rico, Broa, Campinas, Novo Horizonte, Itirapua, Rio Pedras, Sales Oliveira, Fazenda Colorada, Teodoro Sampaio, Paulo de Faria, Araba, Agua Vermelha, Taquaral, Capao Bonito ^119 .
