Description Disc 1 · 2011
55-61 cm. The largest toucan. Black with a dusky brown crown; throat and upper breast white; rump white, crissum crimson; bill orange crimson, fading to greenish yellow on the sides of the maxilla; a large black oval patch near tip of maxilla; a narrow line at base of bill black.

Forages in small groups in the canopy, descends to the understory and to the ground; perches conspicuously on dead branches at the top of trees. Consumes fruit, insects, small vertebrates including birds.

Nests in hollow trees and palms and riverbanks and termitaria.
Habitat and status Disc 1 · 2011
Common in open country with palms and trees, riverine forest, open savannah forest, cerrado, scrub, orchards and plantations, to 1750 meters.

Inland. In Estado Rio de Janeiro has invaded the Paraiba Valley. In Estado São Paulo reported from Vassununga, São Simao, Sertaocinho, Aracacu, Santana, Barreiro Rico, Broa, Campinas, Novo Horizonte, Itirapua, Rio Pedras, Sales Oliveira, Fazenda Colorada, Teodoro Sampaio, Paulo de Faria, Araba, Agua Vermelha, Taquaral, Capao Bonito (119).
