Description Disc 1 · 2011
31-41 cm. Upperparts grayish brown, streaked blackish brown; wing converts grayish brown mottled whitish, buff and tawny; underparts grayish brown streaked blackish brown, boldly spotted blackish brown on the centre of the throat and upper breast and usually with a row of large black spots across the upper breast; eye reddish.
A brown phase also occurs.

Nocturnal. During the day roosts usually on branches in tree up to 15 meters above ground, sometimes much lower on fence posts etc. Forages from perch like a flycatcher.

Not uncommon in lowland forest, forest edges, open woodland, plantations, cerrado, shrub, mangrove swamps, trees close to open country.

Throughout. In Estado São Paulo recorded from Cananeia, Fazenda Intervales, Pontal near Franca, Cantareira, Petrobras, Lagoa São Paulo, Jeriquara, Pariquera-acu, Bertioga, Fazenda Paraiso, Santana, Santa Lucia (119). In Estado Rio de Janeiro recorded from Angra dos Reis.
