Description Disc 1 (2011)

31-41 cm. Upperparts grayish brown, streaked blackish brown: wing converts grayish brown mottled whitish, buff and tawny: underparts grayish brown streaked blackish brown, boldly spotted blackish brown on the centre of the throat and upper breast and usually with a row of large black spots across the upper breast: eye reddish.<nA brown phase also occurs.

A descending phrase of 5 - 7 melancholy notes pi..o...oh...oh..oh..oh..

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

Nocturnal. During the day roosts usually on branches in tree up to 15 meters above ground, sometimes much lower on fence posts etc. Forages from perch like a flycatcher.

Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)

Not uncommon in lowland forest, forest edges, open woodland, plantations, cerrado, shrub, mangrove swamps, trees close to open country.

Throughout. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo recorded from <8E>Cananeia, Fazenda Intervales, Pontal near Franca, Cantareira, Petrobras, Lagoa S<C4>o Paulo, Jeriquara, Pariquera-acu, Bertioga, Fazenda Paraiso, Santana, Santa Lucia ^119 . In Estado Rio de Janeiro recorded from <8E>Angra dos Reis.
