Description Disc 1 (2011)

25-27.5 cm. The adult"s pileum is blackish: sides of head and neck black, heavily spotted with white: upperside brown, the feathers of back, scapulars, and tertials with black centers and patterned with white spots or streaks: underside boldly marked with black and white, the foreneck and chest appearing spotted, the remainder heavily barred: throat and crissum white, the former often speckled with black: iris reddish: bill yellowish green with a bright red spot at the base of the lower mandible: feet pinkish red.<nThe immature is variable, a dark phase has sooty ventral feathers without barring: a pale phase has throat and breast grayish brown, breast weakly barred with white, barred phase | throat gray spotted with white, feathers of breast and belly sharply barred with white.

Forages in mud at water"s edge.

Rare in marshes, rice paddies, grassy ditches, wet pastures, tall grass areas and tangled second growth.
