Description Disc 1 · 2011
25-27.5 cm. The adult's pileum is blackish; sides of head and neck black, heavily spotted with white; upperside brown, the feathers of back, scapulars, and tertials with black centers and patterned with white spots or streaks; underside boldly marked with black and white, the foreneck and chest appearing spotted, the remainder heavily barred; throat and crissum white, the former often speckled with black; iris reddish; bill yellowish green with a bright red spot at the base of the lower mandible; feet pinkish red.
The immature is variable, a dark phase has sooty ventral feathers without barring; a pale phase has throat and breast grayish brown, breast weakly barred with white, barred phase: throat gray spotted with white, feathers of breast and belly sharply barred with white.
