Description Disc 1 (2011)

39-50 cm. The proverbial falcon. Cosmopolitan with the widest distribution latitudinally of any bird. The adult has a black top of head and hindneck: sides of head extensively black: mantle, wing coverts, secondaries, and back to tail coverts light bluish gray, barred with fuscous: primaries sooty black, with white elliptical bars on the inner webs: tail light bluish gray, narrowly tipped white and evenly barred with black: underparts creamy white to light buff, immmaculate to breast, the remainder barred with black: iris dark brown: bare orbit, cere, and legs bright yellow: bill bluish slate, tipped black<nThe adult female is similar, but usually darker and with heavier ventral barring.<nThe immature is fuscous brown above with buffy feather edgings: below buff with heavy black streaks: undertail coverts barred: cere greenish: legs pale bluish.

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

Usually perch-hunts from a high vantage point or singles out prey while circling around in wide spirals and dives after it with speed reaching frequently 250 km<10>h.

Rare in every type of country with exception of large continuous forest tracts.
