Description Disc 1 (2011)

45.0-53.0 cm. A rather long-tailed, round-winged falcon-like medium-sized raptor: the adult has head, neck and underparts light buff: a broad black mask connected across the hindneck by a narrow black band: crown with black shaft streaks: back and wings deep chocolate brown, the remiges cinnamon rufous basally, where also barred with fuscous: tail moderately long, evenly banded with black and creamy white: iris dark brown: cere and gape dull yellow: bill black: feet olive yellow.<nThe immature is like the adult but the feathers on the back and wings are narrowly margined with buffy brown: light areas whiter: sides and tibiae sometimes lightly spotted with buff or fuscous.

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

Perch-hunts from trees at the forest border for snakes. Rarely takes other prey.

Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)

Common in forest clearings, edges, forest remnants, gallery forest, cerrado and savannah with scattered trees. Sea level to 1500 meters but most common at sea level.
