Description Disc 1 (2011)

51-58 cm. A small eagle with a medium-long tail. The adult has a short, bushy crest: head, neck and underside white: the feathers of crest are broadly tipped with black forming a prominent patch on the posterior half of the crown: lores and circumorbital area black: upperparts black, remiges deep sooty brown with a white basal margin on inner webs: secondaries with white tips: tail grayish brown, narrowly tipped with white and with four black bands: iris orange yellow: cere, gape and base of bill bright orange, rest of bill black: toes bright yellow.<nThe immature has black upper parts, mixed with brownish gray: lesser and middle wing coverts tipped with white.

Still-hunts from a high perch in the canopy. Rarely soars.

Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)

Very rare in openings in humid rainforest especially near rivers and open country, also gallery forest and relatively isolated savannah woodland. Sea level to 1700 meters.
