Description Disc 1 · 2011
71 - 84 cm. A large, slender eagle with an occipital crest, the long crest is formed by black occipital feathers with white bases; feathers of hindneck long, forming an erectile nuchal ruff; head, neck and chest light ash brown; throat white; back, scapulars and lesser wing coverts black, the latter often with white tips; middle and greater wing coverts marbled brown and gray, and with fuscous barring; remiges deep fuscous brown, barred paler; upper tail coverts and tail black with a whitish tip and three broad marbled bands of brown and gray; belly creamy buff with narrow cinnamon barring; underside of tail white, broadly banded with black.
The dark adult is black or undersides heavily banded with black and white; iris brown, cere and loral area dark gray; bill black; feet dull yellow.
The immature is similar to the light phase adult, but the head and neck are paler, whitish to light ash gray and spotted black; underside white.
