Description Disc 1 (2011)

37 - 46 cm. A small variable buteo with a short tail. Adult of the race brachyurus that occurrs in southeast Brazil has the sides of the head and upper parts slaty black: underparts white, tail short and with several pale bands.<n There exists a very rare black morph sooty black, white front, tail as in common morph .<nThe immature is like the adult above but browner and the feathers edged with white, buff and rufous: tail bands more numerous, up to 6-8: below whitish or tawny, sparsely streaked or spotted with brown.

Mainly an aerial predator. Soars overhead and swoops down on prey.

Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)

Uncommon. Associated with borders of forests, grassland, marshes, Araucaria forests, wooded savannahs.

Throughout. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo inland not uncommon, e. g. at <8E>Rio Claro, Santa Tereza: at the coast <8E>Cananeia, Paraibuna, Ubatumirim, Itirapua, PE Carlos Botelho, Ariri.
