Description Disc 1 (2011)

33.5 - 40 cm. A small dark buteo with white on the rump: adult black: longer upper tail converts and base of rectrices white forming a prominent rump patch: the tail has a pale gray bar on top, the ventral side with two or three white bars: tibiae rufous: crisssum and under wing coverts white or cinnamon: primaries and secondaries from below black, the primaries barred black at the base: iris gray-brown or yellow: bill black: cere and feet yellow.<nThe immature is dark brown above mottled and barred with rufous: head and neck light buff, heavily marked with brown: forehead and broad superciliary creamy buff: remiges creamy buff at the base becoming rufous or dark brown towards the tips: underparts creamy buff, breast and abdomen striped dark brown: tail bared black and creamy white: tail coverts while above and below.

Seen following mixed bird parties inside forest. Probably a still-hunter.

Rare in humid and montane forests with clearings. Tall secondary forest.
