Description Disc 1 · 2011
41.5 - 50 cm; The male's head neck and upperside light gray; center of the back darker; the flight feathers tipped fuscous brown; rump white; tail gray with banded outer rectrices and a prominent black subterminal band; throat and chest lighter gray, barred and spotted white; rest of undersides barred rufous, brown or white; wing lining white, the primaries tipped black; iris, cere and feet yellow; bill bluish black.
The female is dark brown tinged grayish above, crown and shoulders often marked with buff; nape streaked white; tail as in the male but with more pronounced barring, the pale areas of the outer rectrices tinged with orange buff; throat and chest fuscous brown; the underparts barred as in male.
The immature is like female above but darker with a distinct rufous buff collar; below whitish, heavily streaked with dusky or rufous; iris reddish.
