Description Disc 1 (2011)

43 - 48 cm. Largest tinamou in the area. Upperparts olive brown to rufous brown, darkest on crown: wings, back and rump narrowly barred black: ochraceous stripe on side of neck. Chin and throat white, chest ashy gray turning whiter or buff on belly: flanks buff to ochraceous barred with fuscous, under tail covers cinnamon. Iris reddish, bill black, feet light plumbeous.

Voice Disc 1 (2011)

Calls days and night, an evenly pitched, sometimes tremulous yoooo every 7 - 10 seconds. Also a soft pip pip pip..... at short range.

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

If not hunted not particularly shy, foraging in leaf litter on the ground of high primary forest. Prefers open understory.

Habitat and status Disc 1 (2011)

Regularly encountered locally in primary forest of the Mata Atlantica. Does not occur in smaller primary or secondary forest remnants. Rare further inland.

Distribution Disc 1 (2011)

The Serra do Mar from Rio de Janeiro to the Parana border, e. g. <8E>Serra Bocaina, Ubatuba, Ubatumirim, Fazenda Intervales, PE Jacupiranga, Ilha do Cardoso. Rare in the <8E>Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Org<C4>os, Parque Estadual de Tres Picos ^201 . Has mostly disappeared from inland areas due to deforestation and hunting pressure.
