Male 27 -29.5 cm. Female 21.5-24 cm. Sooty black overall with a scarlet rump extending to the lower back. Long sharp bill pale yellowish. Iris light blue, in juveniles brown. A wide variety of harsh and guttural notes. Song consists of 3 parts "zi-ziii-au". Call various shades of "tchak". Alarm call "grax" ^119 . Forages in canopy of trees. Almost always in small flocks. Colonies nests in picture 3 mostly together in isolated, single trees in the open separated from the forest edge. Quite common at forest edge and in open areas close to large forested areas, near swamps, road sides, lake shores. Throughout, common in forested areas. In the Serras and the littoral from<8E>Nova Friburgo<8E>and<8E>Rio de Janeiro<8E>to<8E>Cananeia<8E>and<8E>PE Jacupiranga. Also inland at many locations. To 1200 meters 5259 Iguape, 10<10>22<10>93.
