The account

Description

15-17 cm. Bill short and heavy, but not as stubby as in Cyanoloxia glaucocaerulea; with a pale base to the mandible, otherwise black.

Male is overall dark blue, the front, superciliary, malar streak, and shoulders light blue.

The female is dark reddish brown, wings darker. Belly fulvous-pale-brown.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select Ultramarine Grosbeak at 10 localities.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Call 'bit'. Song ca 2 sec, frequency of notes becoming lower at the end.

Behavior

Forages in pairs in thickets and in the middle stratum of trees. A skulker.

Habitat and status

Rare, probably due to relentless persecution for the cage bird trade, in forest border, dense thickets, arid scrub.

Throughout. In Estado São Paulo found at Alcatrazes(¹¹⁹), São Sebastiao, Cananeia, Itararé, São Miguel de Arcanjo, Mogi das Cruzes, Ipanema, Itatiba, Rio Mogi Guacu. In Estado Rio de Janeiro found at Cantagalo, Itatiaia, Petropolis, Nova Friburgo (⁴⁰). Up to 1500 meters
