15-16.5 cm. Bill all orange yellow. Black cap with white postocular superciliary. Gray coronal area. Upperparts gray. Yellow bend of wing. Underparts white with black pectoral band. Call "zik". Song a sequence of 5-6 zi notes, "zi zi zi zi zi zi", all notes between 5000 and 8000 Hz, last note sometimes emphasized. Single or in pairs on the ground in forest. Not uncommon in dense scrubby forests with ample underbrush. Mostly in the interior of Estado S<C4>o Paulo, e. g.<8E>Conde do Pinhal, Broa, Pirassununga ^119 , Barretos, Bebedouro, Jaboticabal, Silvania ^40 . Might occur closer to the coast in dry forest.
