21-23 cm. A large finch of open country. Sexes alike. Bill distinct, light orange with a black ridge. Head gray-olive with a darker facial area. Upperparts olive-greenish, streaked blackish. Yellow-olive edges of the primaries. Underparts light gray, more buffy on the belly. <NJuveniles are coarsely streaked blackish below and above. Call "ziup", "zip" vocalization 4 . Song a repetition of several notes that can change from time to time, rather weak for such a big bird, e. g., " zip zep zizit zip zep . . . zip zep zizit zip zep...", ziu zi zitzi . . . ziu zi zitzi . . . Vocalization 1-3, 5-6 . Forages low in scrub, in high grass and on the ground, sometimes at road sides. Common in its limited habitat, damp high altitude grassland with grassy areas and bushes, mostly close to brooks and other wet places. The higher serras of Estado S<C4>o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
