14 cm. Male bright yellow. Forecrown orange. Upperparts olive green streaked darker. <NThe female is buffy gray brown above with less yellow and little orange on the forecrown. Mantle streaked. Whitish throat. Yellow chest and belly, the chest with some dark streaks across. <NThe juvenile has brownish upperparts with dark streaks and dingy white underparts with strong black streaks. <NImmature males are like juveniles but are yellowish above, unstreaked below with a yellow chest band becoming a nuchal collar. Call "zi". Song a repetition of brief phrases such as "zit zit ziu ziu zit ziu ziu" or similar phrases. Forages mostly on the ground and in trees, scrub and bushes. The most common Yellow Finch.
