12.5 cm. Male shining slaty blue, the face, throat and chest darker. Underwings white.

The female is tawny-rufous above, paler below.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select Blackish-blue Seedeater at 4 localities.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call 'zic' (vocalization # 2). Song a short warble of 6-8 notes lasting 1.0 sec 'swe swe si swe si swe si swe', frequency between 3000-5000 Hz (vocalizations # 1 and 3).

Behavior

Forages at all levels in bamboo forest, often close to the ground and inside of bamboo thickets. Seems to deliver its song from a high perch. Usually in pairs.

Habitat and status

Rare in humid forest with plenty of bamboo, sometimes forest border.

Distribution

Throughout. More common in the South of the region, e.g. at Mogi Guacu (¹¹⁹), Serra dos Orgãos (Mike Catsis unpubl.), Itatiaia (Remold unpubl.). Old records from Estado São Paulo are from Campinas, and from Estado Rio de Janeiro, Teresopolis (⁴⁰). To 1200 meters, less regular at sea level.
