10 cm. Male cinnamon brown, underparts lighter. Cap, wings and tail black, the wing with a white speculum, the primaries with buffy margins. <NFemales and immatures are olive-brown above and dark buffy below. Belly yellowish-white. Call "zi" or "ziu", "zi-e" Vocalizations 1,3 and 5 . Song a sequence of 6-8 notes usually arranged as double notes "zisi zisi sihe etc." Vocalizations 2,4,and 6 . Forages in high grass, in scrub and on the ground in small groups. The males of the subspecies /crypta farinha secca area of Rio de Janeiro breed while still in the immature plumage ^40 . Common in protected areas of the interior, almost extinct closer to the coast due to capturing and habitat destruction. Found in cerrado, campo sujo, tall grass areas and savannahs. Originally throughout, up to 1100 meters ^133 . In Estado S<C4>o Paulo found mostly inland, e.g at<8E>Itapetininga, Itirapina, Conde do Pinhal near Espiritu Santo de Pinhal , Aguas de Santa Barbara, Tremembe ^119 . In Estado Rio de Janeiro found at<8E>Nova Friburgo, Cantagalo, ^40 ,Rio de Janeiro ^164 . The subspecies /saturata from the southern area of Estado S<C4>o Paulo Vila Ema, Ipiranga, Mogi das Cruzes which was much darker chestnut is now apparently extinct ^119 . 9263 Calls.
