The account

Description

12 cm. Bill yellow or pinkish yellow.

The male has gray upperparts and white underparts. Gray flanks. Wings gray with a white speculum.

The female has olive-brown upperparts, light brown undersides with a whitish belly.

Juveniles have brownish upperparts, buffy underparts with a broad indistinct chest band.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select White-bellied Seedeater at 5 localities.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Behavior

In pairs or flocks in grassy areas with trees on the ground or in trees.

Habitat and status

Rare in open dry forest with grass underneath, thickets, bushy savannahs, often near water.

Distribution

Since 1940 invading the North of Estado São Paulo (¹¹⁹), to be expected now closer to the coast. Found at Ubatumirim, Tremembe, São Jose do Barreiro (¹¹⁹). There are old records from Estado Rio de Janeiro from Lagoa Feia, Cardoso Moreira, Sepetiba, Rio Paraiba (⁴⁰). To 800 meters
