11 cm. Male has a black bill. Black upperparts with a white stripe in the center of the crown. Malar streak. Wing speculum and rump white. White underparts. Throat black. <NThe female has a yellow bill, or a yellow mandible. Olive upperparts, yellowish buffy underparts. Call "fip" or "tsir" ^119 . Song variable, 15 notes in 2 sec. vocalization 1 . forages in high grass or shrubs. Sings from high perches, trees, tops of tall shrubs, telephone lines. Still locally common at forest edge and scrubby open areas, although subject to trapping for the cage bird trade. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo mostly inland.
