12 cm. <NMale has a black head. White patch above the lores and below the eye. Collar white. Throat white, bordered below by black pectoral band. Black upperparts. Wings black with two buff wingbars and a white speculum: Belly and crissum whitish. Rump whitish buff. <NThe female has brownish upperparts, two buff wingbars, and a white speculum. Throat white, chest and belly buffy. <NYoung male picture 3 reflects the male pattern and has a gray head, a white throat, A brown chest band. Upper side brown. Collar not evident. Wings dusky with two buffy wingbars and a whitish speculum. A buff chest and belly. Call "geb". Song in structure reminding of song of /Stephanophorus diadematus , rises and falls, repeating a sequence of 1-4 sounds ^119 . In pairs or small groups foraging in grass and shrubs, rarely on the ground ^133 . Rare in open swamps, at river and lake edge. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo found near<8E>Iguape, otherwise mostly inland Rio Pedras, Pontal near Franca, Vista Bonita, Lagoa S<C4>o Paulo ^119 . In Estado Rio de Janeiro found at<8E>Lagoa Feia ^40 .
