The account

Description

11 cm. Bill yellow. Male slaty gray. Breast in the middle and belly white. Wings and tail blackish, the wings with a white speculum and one white wing bar.

The female is brownish olive above, with paler underparts, the center of the belly yellowish white.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call 'zia' or 'irit'. Song a sequence of very high frequency notes 'si si si si si si si si si si si ending on an 'imp' note,1 sec (¹¹⁹). The song recorded by Juan Mazar Barnett (vocalization # 1) consists of a 0,5 sec long trill of 20 sounds followed by a longer sequence of higher frequency 'si' sounds, up to 15 single sounds in 3 sec.

Behavior

A forest seedeater that forages in trees and bamboo thickets found usually singly and very rarely in small flocks.

Iguazu National Park, Parana August.

Habitat and status

Rare and nomadic, probably on the verge of extinction (¹¹⁹) due to deforestation; in humid forest and border. Appeared in the past when the bamboo was bearing seeds.

Distribution

Coastal humid forests and high serras. In Estado Rio de Janeiro found in Desengano State Park (Riberao Vermelha and Santa Maria Madalena), Nova Friburgo, Teresopolis, São Aleixo, Tingua, Serra Mantiqueira, Parati. In Estado São Paulo found in Lagoinha, Picinguaba, Ubatuba, Juquia, Iguape, Riberao Pires (28 km SE of São Paulo City). To 1200 meters
