Red-legged Honeycreeper

12 cm. Bill decurved and slender, length depending on the age of the bird. <NThe male is purplish blue. Mask, mantle, wings and tail black. Top of head and front pale turquoise-blue. Underwing covers yellow. <NThe male also has a post-breeding "eclipse" plumage which resembles the female plumage but with a black back, wings and tail, and bright red legs. <NThe female is dull grayish green above, lighter below with dull streaks. Superciliary light yellow. Light edgings to the wing feathers. Legs reddish. Call "tzwee", and a nasal "tsey". Forages in canopy of flowering trees in small groups or pairs. Forms part of mixed species flocks. Mato Grosso, October. Uncommon in primary and secondary forest, forest edge, savannah, coffee plantations, gallery forest. Migrates in conjunction with the flowering and fruiting of trees. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo observed at<8E>Rio Claro ^119 .
