18.5 cm. A striking tanager of the coastal area. <NMale has a silver white swollen mandible. All bright crimson, the mantle somewhat darker. Wings and tail black. <NThe female is grayish-brown above, the rump more reddish. Pale reddish-brown underneath. Crown gray. Call a diagnostic "djeb", song a slowly repeated djile djile djile ^121 . A questionable dawn song and a whisper song is also described ^159 . Forages in bushes and small trees most commonly up to 5 meters, in pairs and small groups. Open cup nest, October-December. Usually common in bushy areas and overgrown orchards and gardens usually close to water: also in open forest and forest borders and parks. Throughout in the coastal area, goes as far inland as<8E>Petropolis, Nova Friburgo <8E> and<8E>Cantagalo<8E>in Estado Rio de Janeiro ^40 . Below 400 meters ^133 . 16207 Calls.
