18 cm. Male has a swollen lower bill which is shining silvery white. Black with violet sheen. Throat and chest dark red becoming blackish on belly. <NThe female is dark red-brown above, the rump brightest, and paler dull red below. Commonly heard is a loud "chik .... chik...". Song, what Willis and Oniki describe as "pichu, cheri" ^119 vocalization 1 . Found in pairs or small groups foraging from the ground up to 12 meters for insects and fruit. Also feeds at flowers. Deep cup nest in bush or small tree. September-February Para ^159 . Uncommon in secondary brush and forest edge, along rivers, roads and savannah, overgrown plantations and orchards.
