18-19 cm. Male is brown-red above, brighter red below. Flanks gray. Scarlet crown patch bordered on the sides by a black line. <NThe female is olive-brown with a yellow crown patch. Buffy or light ochraceous below. A variety of diverse calls and songs. Dawn song a repeated "peek peer peek peer" vocalization 2 , a sequence of whistles "pi pu pi p i pi." vocalization 3 and 6 seems to be the day song. Call a series of "chekchekchekchek...." vocalization 1, etc. and "chek chek dji dji dhji vocalization 4 Forages using upward hops and flutters close to the ground not higher than about 10 meters up. Is encountered in pairs and small family groups, sometimes in mixed species flocks. Follows driver ant swarms. Avoids forest edge. Rio de Janeiro September, November, December: nest cup shaped ^159 .
