Black-goggled Tanager

16.5 cm. In the male the forehead and area around eyes is black. Upper side dusky olive brown. Wings and tail black. Underside buff, deepest buff on the on crissum. Yellow semiconcealed crest. A white wing patch is visible in flight. <NThe female lacks the black goggles and yellow crest. <NThe juvenile is like the female but with dark gray flammulation on chest and belly. Call a "tsek". High whistle "pseeee . Song 1 is a repetition of a 3-4 sec series of slurred whistles | whee whur whur whit phee phee: a second song is an indefinitely long series of squeals, long slurred whistles, buzzy notes and short psps in which the same note is often repeated 2-5 times ^159 . Forages in the dense subcanopy and understory of forest, drops down to the ground, especially when following ant swarms. Often at forest edge in semiopen areas.
