The account

Description

18 cm. Male blue-black. Rear crown with a scarlet streak. White under-wing linings.

The female is rufous above, grayer on head. Light buff field around the eye. Bright rufous rump and tail. Below ochraceous, white on the chin. Dusky streaks on the breast give the female a flammulated appearance.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call a high 'chit' or 'tsik'. Song a repeted 'che-chweek...che-chweek....'. Song has individual variations (vocalizations # 2, 4 and 6)..

Behavior

Forages in subcanopy, thickets, and dense tangles at woodland borders for fruits and insects. Visits feeders with fruits. Follows occasionally army ant swarms (¹⁵⁹). Infrequently observed in mixed species flocks.

Breeding

Cup nest in thickets etc. October-January (¹⁵⁹).

Relatively common in open secondary forest, primary forest border, thickets adjacent to forest, Occurs also in parks, orchards, plantations and secondary scrub.

Distribution

Throughout. In humid forests and borders of the littoral and also further inland in dryer forest habitat and scrub (Rio Claro, Fazenda Paraiso, ¹¹⁹). To 1200 meters (⁴⁰).
