Flame-crested Tanager

16.5 cm. Male glossy black. Orange crest from front to back of head. Rump orange buff. Center of throat orange buff. Inner shoulder and underwing linings white. <NThe female is uniform rufescent brown. Underside ochraceous. Rump rufous. Throat whitish. Calls weak "zet zet". Dawn song "sis sik sis sik sis..." similar to /Colibri serrirostris ^119 , day song a high pitched "zi zi zi sisisisi zeee" Vocalization 2 . A rather silent bird. Forages in the canopy and subcanopy searching through the outer foliage for fruits and arthropods. Also descends sometimes to eye level. Almost always in mixed flocks.
