The account

Description

13 cm. Male has a yellow bill with black ridge. Side of the head, lores and throat black. Superciliary and sides of the head bordering the black ear coverts yellow. Above olive-green. Rump and breast orange rufous. Remainder of the underparts yellow, tinged gray on the flanks. Crissum bright yellow.

The female is olive-green above, with a short yellow superciliary and eye ring. Rump yellow. Underparts pale yellow with some olive wash on breast and flanks (paler below than the female of Hemitraupis ruficapilla).

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Song a fast sequence of 'chit' or 'cheep' notes (Vocalization # 1). Dawn song 'TIT-de-de-DIT TIT TIT', or similar, last note sometimes squealing, cadence reminiscent of a drummer's roll (¹⁵⁹).

Behavior

Forages in canopy and subcanopy.

Breeding

In Paraguay breeds in September/October (¹⁵⁹).

Habitat and status

Mostly extralimital to the North. Occurs in open forest, gallery forest, plantations, isolated forest remnants, cerradao, orchards.

Distribution

Appears at Rio Claro, Estado São Paulo, but does not breed (¹¹⁹). Found in western Estado São Paulo at Itararé, Presidente Epistacio, São Jeronimo (⁴⁰). Possibly a straggler closer to the coast. Below 1000 meters
