Guira Tanager

13 cm. Male has a yellow bill with black ridge. Side of the head, lores and throat black. Superciliary and sides of the head bordering the black ear coverts yellow. Above olive-green. Rump and breast orange rufous. Remainder of the underparts yellow, tinged gray on the flanks. Crissum bright yellow. <NThe female is olive-green above, with a short yellow superciliary and eye ring. Rump yellow. Underparts pale yellow with some olive wash on breast and flanks paler below than the female of /Hemitraupis ruficapilla . Song a fast sequence of "chit" or "cheep" notes Vocalization 1 . Dawn song "TIT-de-de-DIT TIT TIT", or similar, last note sometimes squealing, cadence reminiscent of a drummer"s roll ^159 . Forages in canopy and subcanopy. In Paraguay breeds in September<10>October ^159 . Mostly extralimital to the North. Occurs in open forest, gallery forest, plantations, isolated forest remnants, cerradao, orchards. Appears at<8E>Rio Claro, Estado S<C4>o Paulo, but does not breed ^119 . Found in western Estado S<C4>o Paulo at<8E>Itarar<CA>, Presidente Epistacio, S<C4>o Jeronimo ^40 . Possibly a straggler closer to the coast.
