The account

Description

14 cm. Male is mostly gray with chestnut hood. Lores, chin and front black. Center of belly white.

The female is olive-green above with a cinnamon head. Underneath yellowish buff. Center of belly white.

Juvenile male (already singing) is similar to the female, but has gray olive flanks and is more brownish-olive above. Belly white.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select Chestnut-headed Tanager at 7 localities.

Historical checklist localities on the disc's own area map — the red dots the original program drew, placed by its recovered projection. Not a range map: it shows the places whose checklists record the bird, nothing more.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call a high 'zip'. Song a high pitched 'si si si sui sui', sometimes 6 or only 4 notes, often repeated (Vocalization # 1 and sonogram in picture # 4).

Behavior

Forages in dense undergrowth quietly and unobtrusively and is therefore difficult to see, if it does not sing.

Habitat and status

Rare in undergrowth of dense forest and forest borders.

Distribution

Throughout, recorded in Estado São Paulo from Itapeva and Serra Bocaina (¹¹⁹), Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Orgãos near Teresopolis; old recordings from Estado São Paulo are from Piquete, Itararé and near Ourinhos(⁴⁰). Between about 700 and 1200 meters in Estado Rio de Janeiro (Teresopolis), possibly at lower altitudes further south.
