25.5-29.0 cm. A large long tailed black and white tanager of forest. Eyes yellow. Blue-black hood extending over back and chest. Scapulars, rump, and underparts white. Tail black, the feathers with white tips and very long. Wings black with tertials broadly edged white. Call "tix... tix", song complex, a repetition of three-syllable strophes "wee-tju-tju" with a long rattle and several squeaks at the end, in between the three-syllable strophes are two high whistles, listen to vocalization 2, see sonogram picture 2 . In small groups in subcanopy of dense forest and forest edge Cup nest in small tree or shrub, October ^159 . Where it occurs, it is not uncommon in extensive forests and in open areas adjacent to large forested areas. Rare in Atlantic rainforest areas of Estado S<C4>o Paulo: more common in the forests of Estado Rio de Janeiro, e. g.<8E>Serra Mantiqueira, Pereque, Serra dos Org<C4>os, Nova Friburgo, Pirai<8E>. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo recorded from<8E>Sete Barras, Ubatumirim, Alto do Ribeira, Fazenda Intervales, Serra Bocaina, Arapei. ^119 . Old records are from<8E>Cananeia, Cubatao, Piquete, Jacarei 70 km NE of S<C4>o Paulo City , and from many inland localities ^40 .
