The account

Description

25.5-29.0 cm. A large long tailed black and white tanager of forest. Eyes yellow. Blue-black hood extending over back and chest. Scapulars, rump, and underparts white. Tail black, the feathers with white tips and very long. Wings black with tertials broadly edged white.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call 'tix... tix', song complex, a repetition of three-syllable strophes 'wee-tju-tju' with a long rattle and several squeaks at the end, in between the three-syllable strophes are two high whistles, listen to vocalization # 2, see sonogram (picture 2).

Behavior

In small groups in subcanopy of dense forest and forest edge

Breeding

Cup nest in small tree or shrub, October (¹⁵⁹).

Habitat and status

Where it occurs, it is not uncommon in extensive forests and in open areas adjacent to large forested areas.

Distribution

Rare in Atlantic rainforest areas of Estado São Paulo; more common in the forests of Estado Rio de Janeiro, e. g.Serra Mantiqueira, Pereque, Serra dos Orgãos, Nova Friburgo, Pirai. In Estado São Paulo recorded from Sete Barras, Ubatumirim, Alto do Ribeira, Fazenda Intervales, Serra Bocaina, Arapei. (¹¹⁹). Old records are from Cananeia, Cubatao, Piquete, Jacarei (70 km NE of São Paulo City), and from many inland localities (⁴⁰). To 1400 meters (¹³³).
