Description

11 cm. Male with crown and nape light blue, head sides and throat black. Front black. Purplish black upperparts. Rump bright yellow. Underparts yellow.

The female is olive-green above with a light bluish crown and nape. Front buff. Underparts olive yellow.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call a plaintive 'tweeer', a low frequency 'chak" (vocalization # 2). Song a fast twittering warble (vocalization # 1).

Behavior

Pairs forage mostly in the tops of trees, but descend to fruiting shrubs, thickets etc.

Rio Grande do Sul January (¹⁵⁹).

Habitat and status

Uncommon in open forest and forest edge, high altitude forest, second growth, gardens, plantations, scrub.

Distribution

Throughout. In winter appears in the interior and the coastal belt in small flocks. In Estado São Paulo found at Iguape, Fazenda Intervales, Serra Bocaina (¹¹⁹), Bauru, Ipanema (⁴⁰). In Estado Rio de Janeiro records from Cantagalo, Cabo Frio (⁴⁰).
