10 cm. Male shining blue black above, more purple on the head. Forecrown to behind the eye yellow. Throat black, the rest of underside yellow. <NThe female is olive above, grayish white below. Sides and crissum greenish yellow. The typical call is a nasal "bee-bee" vocalization 2 , song is a jumble of rapidly delivered whistles and squeaks interspersed with "bee-bee" vocalization 1 . Forages in canopy of trees, in high scrub, sometimes in mixed flocks. Nests are domed. Paraguay, November ^159 . Not uncommon in forest of the littoral and dryer inland forests, forest edge, gallery forest, open woodland and scrub. Widely distributed inland, rare at the coast.
