15-16 cm. A big heavy bodied vireo. Heavy shrike-like bill light brown. Gray head with rusty brown front and superciliary. Upperparts olive brown. Throat and chest yellowish. Belly whitish. <NSubspecies /ochrocephala of southern Southeast Brazil has a brownish crown with rufous restricted to the superciliary and lores ^133 . Legs pinkish. Eye red. Has a great variety of calls. Most common a short and loud flute-like phrase repeated several times before going on to another phrase type. Different types of these phrases are heard on vocalization 1-3 and 5. Also produces shorter whistles such as "wee-wee" vocalization 4 or "wiuwiu-i" vocalization 6 . Slow moving, usually in pairs. Forages in canopy of trees. Regularly in mixed flocks. Locally common in a variety of forest types, secondary forest edge, gallery forest, open dryer forest, parks. Not in dense primary forest.
