The account

Description

12.5 cm. The common greenlet of the coastal humid forests. Crown bright rufous; the rest of the upperparts bright olive. Underside yellowish. Grizzled gray face and forecrown with a diagnostic blackish auricular spot. Bill quite short with a dusky mandible. Eyes dark reddish brown.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call a 'chek', song phrases consisting of 2 to three single syllables repeated rapidly up to 10 times. Interval between phrases about 0.1 s, frequency of phrases below 5 khz.

Forages in the canopy of trees between 1 and 15 meters Accompanies mixed flocks.

Common in coastal humid forests and also further away from the coast.

Throughout southern and southeastern Brazil. e.g. in Estado São Paulo found at Tiete, Bauru, Ipiranga, Arroio, Serra da Cantareira, Ipanema, Itapetininga, Fazenda Intervales; In Estado Rio found at Itatiaia, Maua, Petropolis, Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo. Up to 2000 meters.
